EDGED ON NEW YEAR’S EVE

Cranbrook, BC – Brock Montgomery scored twice leading the Kootenay Ice to a 3-2 home ice win over the Calgary Hitmen New Year’s Eve at Western Financial Place.

The loss snapped Calgary’s eight game winning streak on the road.

Levi Cable scored the game winning goal for the Ice breaking a 2-2 third period tie with 9:40 remaining.

Zane Jones and Cody Sylvester scored for the Hitmen who twice came back to tie the game after falling behind 1-0 and 2-1.

Mack Shields, making just his ninth career WHL start, made 34 saves in the setback as Kootenay outshot Calgary 37-32.

The penalty killers for both teams were perfect as The Hitmen went 0-3 on the powerplay while killing all seven Kootenay chances.

Calgary, now 24-10-1-3, will open a three game homestand Wednesday night against Calgary Flames prospect Michael Ferland and the Brandon Wheat Kings.  Game time is 7:00 p.m. Scotiabank Saddledome.
